Handbook for CBRN Respiratory Protection Available from NIOSH

Published August 8, 2018

A new NIOSH publication presents technical information about respiratory protection from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear hazards, as well as guidance on selection, use, and maintenance of CBRN respirators and requirements for CBRN respiratory protection programs. The Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Respiratory Protection Handbook is intended primarily for fire departments, law enforcement, emergency medical services, corrections officers, and other organizations that use CBRN respirators during emergency responses. The information in the handbook is also potentially useful to other organizations where CRBN respirator use is necessary.

The information on respirator selection in the handbook contains a flowchart that depicts the decision process for determining whether a CBRN self-contained breathing apparatus, a CBRN powered air-purifying respirator, or a CBRN air-purifying respirator is appropriate. A separate chapter describes training programs that comply with standards from OSHA and the National Fire Protection Association.

The publication is available from the NIOSH website.
