NIOSH Revises Policy on Use of Emergency Breathing Support Systems

Published February 26, 2014

NIOSH is revising its policy on the use of Emergency Breathing Support Systems (EBSS), or “Buddy Breathers,” the agency announced in a Feb. 18 letter to interested parties. NIOSH will recognize EBSS systems that are compliant with the 2013 edition of the National Fire Protection Association’s Standard on Open-circuit Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for Emergency Services as a part of the NIOSH SCBA approval for users who have received the appropriate level of training. The policy change will only apply to SCBAs that meet the requirements of the 2013 NFPA standard, or subsequent editions.
