NIOSH to Expand Annual N95 Day "Beyond the N95"

Published August 23, 2017

AIHA is an official partner of NIOSH’s N95 Day, a day the agency sets aside annually to emphasize the importance of the proper use of NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirators in the workplace. This year, N95 Day will be observed on Tuesday, Sept. 5. NIOSH encourages employers, respiratory protection program managers, and safety managers in all industries that rely on N95 respiratory protection to take time on N95 Day to focus on safety and familiarize themselves with NIOSH’s resources on respiratory protection. AIHA plans to support NIOSH by using its social media channels to share respiratory protection resources and join the online conversation using the hashtag #N95Day. Follow NIOSH on Facebook, Twitter, the NIOSH Science Blog, and Instagram.

Since 2012, NIOSH has used N95 Day to primarily focus on N95 respirators. This year, the agency plans to expand the conversation “beyond the N95” to other types of respiratory protection. During NIOSH’s annual N95 Day webinar on Sept. 5, two experts from the agency’s National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) will discuss respirator options beyond the N95 filtering facepiece respirator, including elastomeric respirators and powered air-purifying respirators. The webinar will also explore the results of a survey of respiratory protection device prevalence in U.S. healthcare facilities conducted by the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) and NIOSH. To conclude the webinar, a panel of NIOSH experts will field participants’ questions about respiratory protection. Individuals can register for the free N95 Day webinar online.
