The National Academies Press recently released two publications as free, downloadable PDFs.

Evaluation of the Updated Site-Specific Risk Assessment for the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan, Kansas is an evaluation of the final updated site-specific risk assessment for the new Biosafety Level 4 laboratory, the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF). NBAF is the new facility planned to replace the Plum Island Animal Disease Center as a world reference laboratory for identifying emerging and unknown disease threats. This site-specific risk assessment addresses accidental release of pathogens from NBAF in Manhattan, Kansas. Read more.

Transportation Research Board Special Report 309: Evaluating the Effectiveness of Offshore Safety and Environmental Management Systems is a report that recommends that the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement take a “holistic approach” to evaluate the effectiveness of offshore oil and gas industry operators’ safety and environmental management systems (SEMS), including inspections, audits, key performance indicators and a whistleblower program.
