AIHA Offers Free Workshop on Risk Assessment for TSCA Evaluations and Industrial Hygiene Practice

FALLS CHURCH, Va (August 10, 2022)—AIHA will host a free workshop, “The Many Aspects of Occupational Risk Assessment: Understanding Differing Approaches and Goals,” (PDF) from 1–3 p.m. EST on August 25, 2022. This workshop will highlight the key differences in terminology, objectives, and methods between occupational risk assessment methods used for varying purposes, such as Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) occupational risk evaluations, health and safety compliance, research, and product stewardship programs. Presentations and discussions will focus on collecting and assessing baseline occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) data.

The workshop’s lineup of speakers will include:

  • Fred Boelter, CIH, PE, BCEE, FAIHA, of Boelter Risk Sciences and Engineering LLC
  • Majd El-Zoobi, PE, chemical engineer with EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, Existing Chemicals Risk Assessment Division
  • William Perry, CIH, retired, former director of OSHA’s Directorate of Standards and Guidance
  • Christine Whittaker, PhD, director of CDC/NIOSH’s Division of Science Integration

AIHA volunteer Andy Maier, PhD, CIH, DABT, will be the discussion moderator. Panelists from the Department of Labor, EPA, NIOSH, AIHA, and the private sector have also been invited to join the speakers in discussing current opportunities and challenges.

This workshop will be the first of a series titled “Many Paths, One Goal – Protecting Worker Health.” Each workshop will include short informational presentations and facilitated discussions with panels of experts, with attendees being able to submit questions before and during the event. The series aims to provide opportunities for experts to share information and perspectives on important methodological issues in occupational risk assessment and to build mutual understanding and enhance communication between professionals and stakeholders. While AIHA already supports the development of occupational risk assessment methods through its chartered Risk Committee, other workshops, technical publications, and professional development courses, this new series “will help advance occupational risk assessment methods development and practice for AIHA members and OEHS professionals,” according to Maier.

Interested parties and media partners may subscribe to receive notifications about future workshops in this series.
