The Intersection of Toxicology and Industrial Hygiene

From the effects of extreme weather events on first responders to increasing exposures to chemicals and other substances through manufacturing, consumer use, and post-consumer life, toxicologists are at the forefront of exploring and understanding the effects of chemical, biological, and other agents on human, animal, and environmental health, including the health of workers. In fact, many toxicologists also call themselves industrial hygienists.

Within the Society of Toxicology (SOT), individuals whose work focuses on occupational and public health belong to a "specialty section" that has a mission of advancing the integration of exposure, toxicological and epidemiological principles, and research approaches in addressing occupational, environmentally related, and public health issues. To further this mission, this group has endorsed six scientific sessions for the upcoming 2023 SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo, taking place March 19–23 in Nashville, Tennessee. Through these sessions, attendees will discover answers to questions such as:

  • What is the composition and potency of structural fire smoke at the wildland-urban interface?
  • What are the exposure patterns and health effects of the chronic leaching of legacy flame retardants?
  • What are the cardiopulmonary and mental health effects of extreme heat events on human populations?
  • What are the cancer initiation pathways in first responders?
  • What are the advancements and challenges in evidence-based methods in toxicology?
  • How is health affected by exposure to emerging contaminants?

The SOT meeting will include 70-plus featured and scientific sessions in total, as well as dozens of social events and the three-day ToxExpo where attendees can interact with representatives from research organizations, government agencies, laboratory suppliers, drug developers, consulting firms, and academic institutions.

Please consider joining SOT in Nashville to expand your toxicological knowledge. To view the full scientific schedule and to register, visit the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo website.
