NIOSH Celebrates 50th Anniversary

NIOSH is commemorating its 50th anniversary with a series of special events and publications. Created when Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act of 1970, NIOSH began operations on April 28, 1971. The agency’s celebration includes publication of a series of science blog posts, a timeline of events in NIOSH history, a limited “Research Rounds” series featuring highlights from 50 years of research efforts inside and outside of NIOSH, a special edition of the NIOSH Bibliography covering the agency’s 50 years of accomplishments, and several Wikipedia articles on topics related to NIOSH history. The agency is also hosting an online science seminar. The complete list of NIOSH’s anniversary activities can be found online.

Titled “Looking Back: The Important Role of Science in Fulfilling the Occupational Safety and Health Act,” NIOSH’s 50th anniversary science seminar will be held via Zoom on May 11, 2021, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET. During the presentation, current and past NIOSH leaders will discuss important scientific accomplishments that occurred during their tenure. Participants are required to register ahead of time.
