EU Member States to Evaluate Risks of 28 Substances by 2027

Health and safety agencies in eight European Union member states plan to evaluate human health and environmental risks associated with 28 substances between the years 2025 and 2027. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced the upcoming substance evaluations in its March 26 e-newsletter. According to ECHA, eight substances will be evaluated in 2025, while the remaining 20 evaluations will be divided between 2026 and 2027. ECHA outlines the substances to be evaluated, reasons for concern, and responsible member state agencies in the March 2025 update to the Community Rolling Action Plan, or CoRAP (PDF).

ECHA’s CoRAP fact sheet (PDF) explains that these evaluations aim to clarify whether the use or manufacture of these substances present risks to human health or the environment. Substance evaluations are carried out by EU member states, with ECHA coordinating the process. When member state agencies complete their evaluation, they must consider how to use the information for risk management measures, and ECHA informs the European Commission, chemical registration holders, and other member states of their conclusions. Member states may then choose to propose EU-wide risk management measures or initiate national actions.

The ECHA website provides further information on CoRAP and a complete table of all substances that have been or will be evaluated EU member states. In addition, ECHA provides a guide (PDF) to assist registrants of substances selected for evaluation in navigating the process.
