OSHA Inspection Program for Workplaces with High Injury, Illness Rates Updated

A new directive issued by OSHA updates the agency’s inspection program that directs enforcement resources to workplaces with the highest rates of injuries and illnesses. Following the update, OSHA’s Site-Specific Targeting (SST) program will rely on injury and illness data submitted by employers via OSHA Form 300A for calendar years 2021 to 2023. Under the agency’s new directive, which went into effect on May 20, workplaces with high injury and illness rates based on 2023 data, workplaces that failed to submit the required OSHA Form 300A in 2023, and those with upwardly trending injury and illness rates may be selected for inspection. Workplaces with rates “markedly below industry averages” in 2023 may also be selected for inspection “to verify data accuracy and quality control,” OSHA says. The inspection program does not include construction work sites.

OSHA’s directive also provides information about scheduling and inspection procedures under the program. For further details, see the agency’s news release or its updated guidance for the SST program (PDF).
