ASTM Updates Three Lead Standards, Other Documents
At its meeting on Oct. 4, the ASTM International Committee D22 on Air Quality approved the release of six updates to existing standards. Three of the updated documents concern lead. The updated documents include three practices, which set out requirements and contain instructions for performing one or more specific operations that do not produce a test result; one test method, which explains a definitive procedure that produces a test result; one guide, a compendium that does not recommend a specific course of action; and one terminology standard, which contains definitions of terms and explanations of symbols, abbreviations, or acronyms.
The following recently updated documents are now available on the ASTM website:
D1356-26, Terminology Relating to Sampling and Analysis of Atmospheres, contains most of the terms, definitions, and nomenclature used by the D22 committee. This document was previously updated in 2020.
D6061-26, Standard Practice for Evaluating the Performance of Respirable Aerosol Samplers, covers the evaluation of the performance of personal samplers of non-fibrous respirable aerosol. It is intended to provide information required for characterizing the uncertainty of concentration estimates from samples taken by candidate samplers. This practice was previously updated in 2018.
D7458-26, Test Method for Determination of Beryllium in Soil and Sediment Using Ammonium Bifluoride Extraction and Fluorescence Detection, is intended for environmental remediation projects where beryllium is a contaminant of concern, for characterization of levels of beryllium in soil at sites where beryllium is used in mining or manufacturing applications, and for determination of background levels of beryllium in soil. This method was previously updated in 2021.
E2115-26a, Standard Guide for Conducting Lead Hazard Assessments of Dwellings and of Other Child-Occupied Facilities, is intended to help prevent lead poisoning of children. It standardizes procedures for conducting a lead hazard assessment and provides information needed to develop and recommend lead hazard controls as described in Practice E2252. The standard was previously updated earlier this year.
E2252-26a, Standard Practice for Selection of Lead Hazard Reduction Methods for Identified Risks in Residential Housing or Child Occupied Facilities, outlines lead hazard reduction methods that have been shown to be effective in preventing lead poisoning in children. It complements Guide E2115 and was previously updated earlier this year.
E2271/E2271M-26a, Standard Practice for Clearance Examinations Following Lead Hazard Reduction Activities in Multifamily Dwellings, covers visual assessment for the presence of deteriorated paint, surface dust, painted debris, and paint chips. It addresses environmental sampling of surface dust. This practice was previously updated earlier this year.
