NIOSH Requests Review of Draft Skin Notation Profile Documents
NIOSH requests technical review of 10 draft skin notation profile documents, including profiles for the flavoring compounds diacetyl and 2,3-pentanedione. Occupational exposures to both chemicals have been linked to decreased lung function and to the severe, irreversible lung disease obliterative bronchiolitis. Other health effects of occupational exposure to diacetyl and 2,3-pentanedione include irritation of the skin and eyes. Draft skin notation profiles are also available for the solvent dioxane and for 2,4-toluene diisocyanate, 2,6-toluene diisocyanate, and the mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-toluene diisocyanate. According to NIOSH, 2,4-toluene diisocyanate is used as a chemical intermediate in the production of polyurethane products such as foams, coatings, elastomers, adhesives, and sealants. New draft documents are also available for the chemicals cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone, cyclonite, diethylenetriamine, beta-chloroprene, chlorodiphenyl 42% chlorine, and chlorodiphenyl 54% chlorine.
NIOSH asks reviewers to consider whether the skin notation profile documents clearly outline the systemic health hazards, direct health hazards, and allergic-response-related health hazards associated with exposures of the skin to each chemical. The agency also requests feedback on whether the documents are organized appropriately, if the conclusions are supported by the data, and if the included tables are clear and appropriate.
