Anticipate, Recognize, Evaluate, Control, and Confirm (ARECC)

In a Leadership Perspective article in the January 2011 Synergist, AIHA-NIOSH partnership participants and colleagues presented the logic for expanding the historical industrial hygiene decision-making framework to become “Anticipate, Recognize, Evaluate, Control, and Confirm.” The concept of “confirm” has always been implicit in the framework. It is implicit in the discussion and pictorials in the AIHA® Strategy for Assessing and Managing Occupational Exposures. The new framework makes it explicit. As noted in the article, no formal mechanism is required to make ARECC an integral part of our everyday practice.
