Lack of recognition of the need for flame-resistant (FR) clothing leaves many workers without proper protection. Yet requiring it where it is not needed can be expensive and may unnecessarily add to the employee heat load and employee complaints. Therefore, it is important to accurately assess a workplace to determine the need for FR clothing.
Many workers face unnecessary risks due to the lack of proper flame-resistant (FR) clothing, while others may be required to wear it in situations where it isn’t needed, leading to added costs and discomfort. Striking the right balance is critical for both safety and efficiency. This webinar will provide participants with a comprehensive guide to conducting a workplace risk assessment to determine the necessity of FR clothing. Attendees will explore the requirements of the OSHA Personal Protective Equipment standard (1910.132) and the NFPA 2113 guidelines, with a focus on performing hazard analyses for flash fire risks.
The webinar will delve into the differences between flash fires and open pool fires, highlighting the unique and immediate challenges posed by flash fires, which can result in severe injuries in seconds. Participants will learn to use the Flame-Resistant Clothing Assessment Tool (FRCAT), a practical and user-friendly resource designed to streamline hazard analysis and decision-making.
By attending, safety professionals, including industrial hygienists, will gain actionable insights to improve workplace safety, enhance compliance, and make informed decisions about FR clothing requirements. Attendees will also have the opportunity to provide feedback on the tool, contributing to its ongoing improvement.
Learning Objectives
After this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the prevention vs. mitigation approach in workplace safety.
- Identify scenarios where flame-resistant clothing is necessary and practical.
- Analyze the FR clothing risk assessment process and apply it in real-world settings.
- Understand OSHA PPE standard (1910.132) requirements and review NFPA 2113 guidelines for selecting and maintaining FR garments.
- Differentiate between flash fires and open pool fires, and identify situations likely to result in a flash fire.
