This webinar will share ways that Industrial Hygienists can improve the accuracy of their exposure assessments by using a deterministic modeling tool – with case studies that demonstrate real-world applications involving mixtures and complex scenarios. Case studies will also demonstrate how to leverage existing exposure monitoring data through the use of the Structured Deterministic Model (SDM 2.0) to assess exposures for which monitoring data are not available. Included is an overview of the SDM 2.0 software, and application to several case studies.
SDM2.0 is an Excel-based, user-friendly tool for estimating airborne concentrations that represent potential occupational inhalation exposure to volatile and semi-volatile chemicals and chemical mixtures, aerosols, particulates, and fibers. It includes expanded functionality compared to its predecessor, the Checklist Tool, and a more visually informative report page. SDM 2.0 exposure assessment capabilities include the following:
- Assesses exposure of overall mixtures and their individual chemical components
- Assess exposure under non-ambient conditions
- Expands exposure control category (ECC) 4 into 5 additional categories based on exposure and expands the health risk ranking (HRR) categories from the current 5 levels to seven levels. These modifications greatly enhance risk assessment, risk management, and risk communication efforts.
- The tool includes a chemical database comprised of over 600 chemicals allowing the practitioner to populate required input fields that had to be populated manually in the prior checklist tool. And it includes a user chemical database that allows the user to include chemicals unique to their specific applications.
- Provides a mechanism for utilizing existing quantitative measurements collected on a component of a mixture to calculate the corresponding exposure to the remaining non-measured components.

Presenters
Susan Arnold, PhD, CIH, FAIHA
Susan Arnold is an Associate Professor of Industrial Hygiene in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences at the UMN. She is the Director of the Exposure Science and Sustainability Institute (ESSI) and Deputy Director of the Midwest Center for Occupational Health & Safety. Susan is an AIHA Fellow and was the 2016 ACGIH Board Chair and 2017 past-Chair. She earned her Ph.D. in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences, UMN School of Public Health. She is a Certified Industrial Hygienist. Her research interests include the role of precarious employment in worker exposures and health outcomes, developing, evaluating and applying exposure models, and using novel Bayesian statistical methods incorporating model outputs to develop accurate qualitative (Bayesian prior) exposure judgments and improve professional judgment.
Kent Candee, MS, CIH, CSP, ARM
Kent Candee is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and Safety Professional with a bachelor's in Chemistry from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master's in Industrial Hygiene from Montana Tech. He has over 30 years' experience both as a technician while serving in the United States Air Force as a Bioenvironmental Engineering Technician and professionally. Kent is currently at Los Alamos National Laboratory leading the exposure assessment program and the Industrial Hygiene Team responsible for developing procedures, policies, and guidance documents for field ESH professionals.
Mark Stenzel, FAIHA
Mark Stenzel is the founder and president of Exposure Assessment Applications, LLC, which specializes in human exposure and risk assessments. He worked for 29 years at two Fortune 500 companies in the chemical industry where he managed all aspects of comprehensive industrial hygiene programs focused on the protection of workers’ health. In 2018 he was awarded the AIHA Donald E. Cummings Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Knowledge and Practice of the Industrial Hygiene Profession. He is a member of AIHA’s Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Committee.
