Ventilation is the single most important control strategy for managing airborne hazards in laboratories. It is also the largest controllable operating expense and one of the least understood building systems. Industrial hygienists are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between safety, system performance and energy efficiency as laboratory ventilation evolves toward risk-based ventilation safety management.

This course provides industrial hygiene and environmental health and safety professionals with practical methods to evaluate ventilation risk, assess fume hood performance, optimize airflow, diagnose system dysfunction and collaborate effectively with design and facility engineering teams. Participants will learn how the laboratory ventilation risk assessment, lab ventilation design levels and occupancy analytics—together with airflow testing and validation—support safety, efficiency and continuous performance improvement.

Attendees will identify opportunities to improve ventilation safety, reduce operating costs, enhance resiliency and comply with the laboratory ventilation management requirements described in the 2022 ANSI/ASSP Z9.5 standard. The session also introduces the I2SL Smart Labs Toolkit and practical approaches to implementing Smart Labs programs in laboratory buildings. Attendees will leave with actionable tools, performance metrics and communication strategies to position themselves as Smart Lab champions within their organizations.
