Stephen

Fascinated with adventure from early on, Stephen loved to mountain climb around the United States with his father. He graduated with a degree in Mining Engineering and took a job in Canada, working at remote mining sites in the far northern reaches. After several years as a health and safety coordinator, he returned to the USA to further his education.
Intrigued with the rising interest in sustainability, he joined a regional firm and spent several years working towards transforming mining sites into a more ‘green’ platform. Stephen eventually retired as a top executive for a multi-national consulting firm and a leading expert in strategic sustainability. He also spent several years on the Board of Directors of AIHA and the Product Stewardship Society and now actively advances sustainability strategies through public policies and legislation at the state and territorial levels in the USA and Canada.
Stephen’s Professional Role Today
![]() | In retirement, Stephen channels his decades of leadership in mining, sustainability, and consulting into a highly influential advisory and mentorship-focused phase, remaining deeply engaged both professionally and through his volunteer work with AIHA. He continues to advise state and territorial governments in the U.S. and Canada on sustainability policy, helping shape legislation that balances environmental stewardship with industrial practicality. Rather than leading large organizations, Stephen now focuses on targeted, high-impact contributions—serving as a senior advisor on select projects, speaking at industry events, and sharing insights on transforming traditional industries like mining into sustainable operations. His reputation as a pioneer in “green” mining practices makes him a sought-after voice in both policy and industry circles. |
At the same time, Stephen becomes increasingly dedicated to developing the next generation of OEHS professionals through his ongoing involvement with AIHA. He mentors early-career practitioners, contributes to training programs, and participates in panels and workshops that highlight emerging challenges in sustainability and worker safety. Drawing on his adventurous spirit and real-world experience, he inspires others to pursue impactful careers that blend technical expertise with environmental responsibility. In this stage, Stephen’s legacy is defined not only by his professional accomplishments, but by the lasting influence he has on the people and practices shaping the future of occupational and environmental health and safety.
