Investigating Impulse Noise

By: Abby Roberts

Although noise is present in almost every workplace, preventing hearing loss remains a challenge for occupational and environmental health and safety professionals. CDC estimates, based on data from 2014, that 12 percent of U.S. workers have hearing difficulties. One in four of these workers can attribute their hearing loss to occupational noise exposures. Workers’ risk of hearing loss increases in environments with complex noise, that is, when sharp, sudden impulse noise is added to the Gaussian noise of the background.

New White Paper: Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM): A Process to Protect Health Care Workers and Recipients

    Updated White Paper: Workers' Rights

This white paper outlines nine fundamental workplace protections that AIHA considers essential for all workers, including the right to a safe workplace, access to safety information, proper training, medical confidentiality, ability to refuse unsafe work, complaint procedures, inspection participation, safety committee involvement, and injured worker protections. This document serves as a guide for public policy advocacy and international work, aiming to extend these critical safeguards to all workers while acknowledging that many, including public employees, independent contractors, and temporary workers, currently lack full protection under existing regulations.

    Hierarchy of Controls

This white paper is a high-level discussion of the application of the hierarchy of controls, providing resources to take this key approach for a variety of professionals and to apply it consistently to many different occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) issues facing the public and workers today.
