While there’s no “holy grail” of leading indicators, there is a practical approach that organizations can use to elevate their metrics. ​Presenters will provide participants an overview of the concepts behind a truly practical approach to EHS leading indicators, as well as specific sample metrics and case studies all organizations can put to use at the site, business unit, and/or corporate level. Combining a user-friendly, easily-communicated framework with real-world evidence, we provide answers to long-standing questions that will enable attendees and their organizations to develop – and sustain – the leading indicator initiatives they need to achieve world-class EHS excellence. This investigation of the common best practices in leading indicator development and tracking will enable organizations just embarking on their leading indicators journey, as well as those striving for sustained excellence alike.​

While one size does not fit all when it comes to leading indicators, research conducted by the Campbell Institute at the National Safety Council has shown that robust leading metrics do share common critical characteristics. What’s more, these indicators can be classified into a taxonomy of specific categories and metrics that helps all organizations better conceptualize their implementation, use, and iteration. This research, involving organizations in diverse industries worldwide, also indicates that there are many similarities in the enabling factors that drive the effective use of leading indicators – as well as similarities in the barriers to their implementation.

As the next phase in this long-term ongoing study, EHS executives and experts from Campbell Institute Member organizations have shared a wealth of practical leading indicator information – focused on how to design, dig in, implement, and iterate world-class metrics programs. Taken together, these numerous years of mixed-method research, including expert workgroups, surveys, case studies, and quantitative and qualitative analysis, have led to the development of a practical guide and thought map of world-class EHS leading indicators, with proven lessons learned around defining, aligning, refining, and designing programs that truly work.​

John Dony is the Director for Environmental, Health, Safety & Sustainability (EHS&S) at the National Safety Council. In this role, Dony is responsible for the development and continuous improvement of the Council’s EHS&S management system and associated programs. He works closely with the National Safety Council Executive Team to inform NSC EHS&S-related workplace strategy.

Dony also serves as the Director of the Campbell Institute, the global EHS&S center of excellence. In this role, he sets Institute strategy, oversees the day-to-day operation of EHS&S initiatives and other key programs, and works closely with nearly 40 member organizations, partners, and others to share best practices and lessons learned around the world.

Joy Inouye is the Research Associate for the Campbell Institute. She has worked on several research topics for the Institute including EHS leadership, risk perception, and contractor management. Inouye is co-author of a recent journal article on leading indicators research and has co-presented on leading indicators at various conferences in the past year.
