New Release!

AIHA recently released A Handbook on Investigating Nuisance Odor Complaints, an illustrative companion guide to the 2024 Odor Thresholds for Chemicals, 4th edition. The handbook provides strategies and procedures for investigating nuisance odor complaints to help IH/OEHS practitioners narrow the list of possible sources and reduce or eliminate the need to collect samples for chemical analysis and characterization.

The roadmap for nuisance odor investigation, depicted by the flow chart in Appendix A, focuses first on finding the likely source, then on identifying the odorous agent or substance, and finally on the hazard or health risk posed by exposure to the odorous substance or mixture. By understanding these principles and implementing a coherent investigation strategy, the IH/OEHS professional can make informed decisions and take actions that improve the likelihood of identifying the odor source and finding a resolution to odor complaints.

Central to this initiative are two foundational pillars: Risk Assessment and Hierarchy of Risk Treatment (HoRT), which provide a robust framework for identifying and mitigating risks before they manifest.
