Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the workplace, but occupational and environmental health and safety professionals are often left to cut through the noise on their own. This half-day PDC delivers a practical, ethical and accessible introduction to AI. This course centers on the two things OEHS professionals need first: 1) a working ethical framework and 2) a complete, validated AI workflow. The session opens with a rapid, plain-language orientation to AI concepts and terminology relevant to OEHS work, followed by a dedicated hour of ethical decision-making aligned with BGC and BCSP codes of conduct, using short OEHS case examples to distinguish appropriate from inappropriate applications of AI.

The remainder of the course is a single guided VIBE-coding exercise in which participants build, validate and stress-test a micro OEHS tool (e.g., hazard banding web app; preliminary hazard assessment screening tool, etc.). The course is built on the Applied AI for ESH Professionals framework and follows guidance from the AIHA publication “Using AI to Enhance OEHS,” to which the instructor contributed. Participants will leave with one working tool, a repeatable workflow pattern they can apply to other tasks, and a clear ethical framework for leading responsible AI adoption within their organizations.

Learning Objectives

After this online PDC, participants will be able to:

  • Apply ethical decision-making frameworks aligned with BGC and BCSP codes of conduct to AI-driven OEHS scenarios.
  • Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate applications of AI within OEHS settings.
  • Construct a simple, validated VIBE-coding workflow using the “one-endpoint-per-intent” approach.

Presenter

Phil Clark, MS, CIH, CSP
Phil is an industrial hygienist and safety professional with more than 20 years of experience in occupational and environmental health and safety. His career has included supporting military operations, national laboratory research, and consulting across a broad range of industries. He currently serves as the lead NFPA 2 trainer for the AIChE Center for Hydrogen Safety, where he teaches hydrogen safety to engineers, safety professionals, and technical leaders. His work has focused on industrial hygiene, process safety, emerging technologies, and the safe deployment of hydrogen and other advanced energy systems.

Phil is the founder of Omitz, LLC, where he helps ESH professionals apply artificial intelligence in practical, ethical, and defensible ways. His work centers on developing AI-enabled workflows that improve productivity while maintaining professional judgment, regulatory compliance, and ethical decision-making. As an early adopter of AI within the ESH profession, he regularly teaches workshops and professional development courses on integrating AI into industrial hygiene and safety practice, with an emphasis on using these tools to augment, rather than replace, the expertise of ESH professionals.
