- The LITE eLearning Subscription provides 2 connections to each live webinar. The primary and secondary contacts (group coordinators) determine how their groups will utilize these connections. Groups who have submitted rosters will begin receiving welcome emails on January 15, 2025.

AIHA University Webinar: Innovative Modeling with IH Mod 2.0 and Monte Carlo Simulation Techniques

Accurately assessing and managing inhalation exposure risks in the face of uncertainty and variability is a persistent challenge for industrial hygienists and exposure professionals. This webinar introduces IH Mod 2.0, a versatile Excel-based freeware tool available on the AIHA website for assessing workplace and consumer inhalation exposures. With its dual capabilities for deterministic analysis and stochastic modeling (Monte Carlo Simulation), this tool addresses variability and uncertainty in exposure estimates. It’s an essential resource for industrial hygienists aiming to understand short- or long-term airborne contaminant concentrations under diverse workplace scenarios, including spill events, and to evaluate the impact of various factors and engineering controls (e.g., ventilation improvements) on worker exposure levels.
Participants will explore the IH Mod 2.0 suite of exposure models and its extensive support materials, learning to select suitable models and parameter inputs for specific scenarios. The session will delve into both deterministic and probabilistic approaches, using models such as the well-mixed room (box) model, two-zone (near field/far field) model, near-field plume model, and turbulent eddy diffusion model. Real-world case studies will illustrate model applications, highlighting scenarios with well-defined versus uncertain input parameters and emphasizing key exposure determinants.
Special attention will be given to characterizing exposure distributions and interpreting model outputs, which can include concentration curves or time-weighted averages across different percentiles. The discussion will cover critical considerations such as data quality, model validation, and limitations, equipping participants with the knowledge to apply these tools effectively and confidently in their practice.

AIHA University Webinar: From Risk to Safety: Implementing the Flame-Resistant Clothing Assessment Tool

Lack of recognition of the need for flame-resistant (FR) clothing leaves many workers without proper protection. Yet requiring it where it is not needed can be expensive and may unnecessarily add to the employee heat load and employee complaints. Therefore, it is important to accurately assess a workplace to determine the need for FR clothing.
Many workers face unnecessary risks due to the lack of proper flame-resistant (FR) clothing, while others may be required to wear it in situations where it isn’t needed, leading to added costs and discomfort. Striking the right balance is critical for both safety and efficiency. This webinar will provide participants with a comprehensive guide to conducting a workplace risk assessment to determine the necessity of FR clothing. Attendees will explore the requirements of the OSHA Personal Protective Equipment standard (1910.132) and the NFPA 2113 guidelines, with a focus on performing hazard analyses for flash fire risks.
The webinar will delve into the differences between flash fires and open pool fires, highlighting the unique and immediate challenges posed by flash fires, which can result in severe injuries in seconds. Preventing Vector-Borne Diseases in Workers (AIHA Connect 2024 OnDemand)

Industrial Hygienists (IH) anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and recommend controls for environmental and physical hazards that impact workers. Advances in Total Worker Health initiatives now consider physical factors, such as infectious disease vectors that are increasing globally. Vector-borne diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, and dengue kill millions of people every year globally, and cause loss of worker hours. The expertise and tools possessed by IHs are of utmost importance in protecting the workforce from vector-borne disease transmission and ensuring continuous business operations. It is important to work with other occupational health groups (e.g., public health) to identify hazards, develop controls and remediation programs to address risks. The session will discuss: 1) occupational health industry standard guidance tools; 2)the application of a bowtie analysis to prevent vector borne infectious disease transmission; and 3) the tool application to project planning, construction, and operations. Lastly, the health inspection tool will be introduced, which is used to support sustainable field effectiveness of the vector borne disease transmission health risk management process.

The Impulse Noise Inventory (AIHA Connect 2024 OnDemand)

Impulse noise poses a significant challenge for accurate measurement coupled with the challenge of meaningful interpretation of the results. Typically, impulse noise limits are typically described in terms of ceiling values, rather than dose. This can leave many occupationally exposed persons at risk for noise induced hearing loss. In this session, measurement results from numerous impulse noise sources (i.e., various firearm wave forms) are presented. The goal is to enhance the knowledge base of hygienists, enabling them to better assess the associated risks. Additionally, information is presented regarding measurement techniques, data interpretation, impulse noise standards including MIL-STD-1474E and the AHAAH criteria, and the selection of impulse noise measurement equipment.

D1a. Fatality Prevention: AI, Computer Vision, and 3D Sensing
We use an AI system to discover hidden unsafe behaviors. This 3D sensor and camera system uses self-driving car technology to closely track people, industrial vehicles and everything else in the area. One surprising result of this work has been to demonstrate that unsafe behaviors often pass unnoticed by the participants, as we will demonstrate with several memorable videos.

D1b. Big Data in IH: Real-Time Monitoring for IAQ
As industrial hygiene testing moves from sampling a small number of time weighted average samples to real time measurements; the field is moving toward big data. With the application of artificial intelligence, big data seeks to integrate structured and unstructured data into meaningful analyses. Through the application of big data in a study of indoor air in a pharmaceutical workplace, this session will discuss: a) the principles of big data; b) the challenges of large data sets and their analysis; and c) the benefits of real time cloud-based databases. Also, we will review: 1) the various ways to present data, using statistical and graphical methods; and 2) public databases, such as NHANES and UN databases, which can aid in evaluating exposure data and its relation to human health.

Roster Updates
Group coordinators are responsible for providing AIHA with a subscription roster indicating who is authorized to be set up in the online classroom as part of their group. Please note the following on rosters:
- Roster slots are not transferable throughout the year and cannot exceed the maximum size purchased without consultation with AIHA
- Roster additions can be made quarterly (due to AIHA at purchase with updates made on April 1, July 1, and October 1st).
