Legionnaires’ disease (LD) was first recognized in 1976 following an outbreak of pneumonia among delegates at the American Legion annual convention held in the Bellevue Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. Since that outbreak where 221 persons became ill and 34 died, the annual number of cases has continued to rise. Reported cases of Legionellosis have risen from 1,127 to 4,954 from 2000-2013, representing a 320% rise. In response to the ever-increasing number of reported cases and no clear framework for proactive assessment and monitoring of building water systems for Legionella, the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) developed the Recognition, Evaluation and Control of Legionella in Building Water Systems guideline.
This webinar will introduce participants to the history of Legionella and the illnesses it can cause, namely Legionnaires’ Disease (LD) and Pontiac Fever (PF); the pathology of Legionella and how it inhabits, amplifies, and survives in building water systems; and the chain of events that result in human disease. Presenters will then cover the history of Legionella research and update or dispel many of the myths and disproven theories surrounding Legionella.
The second half of the webinar will focus on the 2015 AIHA Legionella guideline and how it can be used as a framework for both proactive routine and investigative assessments of potential Legionella amplification sites in buildings. Participants will become familiar with the guidance contents, as well as its scope and approach to assessing Legionella hazards in buildings. The general framework for developing and implementing an assessment and how results from measuring water parameters, Legionella concentrations, and monitoring control measures may be interpreted and used to direct actions.
Webinar participants will become familiar with the general background and public health issues surrounding Legionella and how the AIHA guidelines provide a competent professional with a fundamental framework for them to develop and perform a Legionella Hazard or Risk Assessment. This introductory webinar is intended for everyone who should know more about Legionella and the risks it poses to workers, visitors, and the general public. Managers, building owners, industrial hygienists, environmental health professionals, and public health officials involved with the investigation of Legionnaires disease would all benefit from the information presented in this webinar.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Explain the general background and public health issues surrounding Legionella.
- Outline how the AIHA guidelines provide a competent professional with a fundamental framework for them to develop and perform a Legionella Hazard or Risk Assessment.
- Understand the guideline contents, scope, and approach to assessing Legionella hazards in buildings.

Dr. David Krause, MSPH, CIH, is the national practice leader for building health sciences at Geosyntec Consultants. He holds a Doctorate in Environmental and Occupational Health and Masters of Science in Public Health from the University of South Florida. He has over 20 years of experience in environmental science and public health, focusing in the areas of toxicology, occupational health, industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, and chemical emission testing.
Dr. Krause is a Certified Industrial Hygienist with expertise in combustion products, flame retardants, irritant chemical exposures, indoor air quality, Legionnaires disease, and mold. Prior to joining Geosyntec, Dr. Krause served as the State Toxicologist for the Florida Department of Health. He co-authored the 2009 Florida DOH Guidelines for the Surveillance, Investigation, and Control of Legionnaires’ Disease in Florida and the 2015 AIHA guidance on the Recognition, Evaluation, and Control of Legionella in Building Water Systems.
Bill Kerbel, CIH, is president of Environmental Health Investigations, inc., an environmental health consulting company located in Sparta, NJ. He is board-certified in the comprehensive practice of Industrial Hygiene and the specialization of Indoor Environmental Quality. Kerbel has over 35 years of experience conducting Indoor Air Quality Investigations and Risk Assessments and was the Project Team Chair for the development of the 2015 AIHA Legionella Guideline.
Jack Springston, CIH, CSP, FAIHA, is an industrial hygiene program manager for TRC Environmental Corporation. He has over 27 years’ experience in industrial hygiene and occupational health. Jack received a BS Degree in Environmental Biology from Long Island University/Southampton College and an MS Degree in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences from City University of New York/Hunter College.
Springston is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and has a sub-specialty certificate in Indoor Environmental Quality. He is a past-Chair of the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s (AIHA) Indoor Environmental Quality committee and Biosafety & Environmental Microbiology committee, and in 2012 was made a distinguished Fellow of AIHA.
Dr. Hung Cheung, MPH, FACOEM, is the President of Cogency Medical. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland and his MPH from Johns Hopkins University. He has over 20 years of experience in practice, including time as the State Medical Director for the State of Maryland. Dr. Cheung has a faculty appointment to the University of Pennsylvania.
